CONFERENCE ON THE 1929 WOMEN’S REVOLT
The OFO (Organizing For Opportunities) Educational Foundation, in collaboration with the African Studies Program at Marquette University USA), government agencies and other Civil Society Organizations, invites scholars, graduate students, practitioners, activists, policymakers, and the public, to a conference commemorating the 1929 Women’s Revolt. The conference is scheduled for December 18-19, 2025, at the Rockview Hotel, Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria.
The 1929 Women’s Revolt, also known as the “Aba Women’s Riot,” was a massive social movement against British colonial rule in 1929. Led by rural women, it represented one of the most significant anti-colonial movements in colonial Nigeria. Organized and led by women, it had a significant impact on British colonial administration in Africa.
The conference presents a significant opportunity to reassess the 1929 Women’s Revolt, understand the context in which it occurred, and examine the role of women in politics and society in contemporary Africa.-
